The basics of the RID cycle
Interpreters certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf maintain their credentials through the Certification Maintenance Program. Certification runs on a multi-year cycle, and you need to earn a set number of continuing education units before the cycle ends. You also need to keep your membership and dues current.
Requirements include a minimum number of Professional Studies units and a Power, Privilege, and Oppression component, with General Studies units making up the rest. Requirements are updated from time to time, so confirm the current numbers in your RID member portal.
Why tracking gets messy
CEUs come from workshops, conferences, webinars, mentorship, and independent study. Some are recorded automatically by an approved sponsor. Others you submit yourself. Certificates land in your email, a downloads folder, or a conference bag, and months later it is hard to tell which ones RID has actually recorded.
The most common problem is not a lack of learning. It is discovering in the final year of a cycle that you are short on a specific category.
A simple tracking system
Log each activity when you finish it: the title, sponsor, date, number of units, and category. Save the certificate alongside the entry. Compare your own log against your RID transcript a few times a year, and follow up with any sponsor whose units are missing.
Keep a running total by category and by cycle. Aim to finish your required Professional Studies and Power, Privilege, and Oppression units early, so the last year is not a scramble. Record CEU costs too, since workshop fees and conference travel are often deductible business expenses for freelancers.
Keeping renewals on your radar
Put your cycle end date somewhere you will see it. Set reminders well ahead of time, not the month before. If you hold other credentials, such as a state license or a court certification, track those deadlines in the same place.
Schedulog keeps your certifications, CEU activities, and renewal reminders together, alongside the rest of your business records. Schedulog is not affiliated with RID.
